about

I wrote and recorded this song after reading the amazing Salman Rushdie novel "The Enchantress of Florence" and much to my surprise it didn't turn out half as dark as I had expected. Must be the influence of the coming spring or something.

lyrics

Angelica, may you find rest,
may you find your luck there in the west,
there's a time for every goddess to retire.

Oh seraph, saint, oh sorceress,
I guess you must have always guessed,
come drought, come flood, come rise, come fall, come fire.

Oh, you sit in awe and wonder,
what life's still got in store.
New countries, new kings, new spells to cast them under,
like we've never seen before.

Now flee this town to where we can't go,
I hate to say I told you so,
but divinity is doomed to turn infernal.

A mandrake's root, a magic word,
a battlecry, a bloody sword,
love and fear are all that is eternal.

And this world is cramped with those who strife,
for eternal everlasting life,
beauty and blood seem as good a lead as any.

Mughal, ottoman, florentine,
no empire's ever as divine,
as time, time, time.

And you sit in awe and wonder,
what life's still got in store.
New countries, new kings, new spells to cast them under,
like we've never seen before.

And we loot and burn and plunder,
no clue what we're looking for.
New countries, new kings, new spells to cast them under,
please leave before you can't leave anymore.
Please leave before you can't leave anymore.
Please leave before you can't leave anymore.
Please leave before you can't leave anymore.
